Experiences

The Global Emergency Medicine Fellowship at Eastern Virginia Medical School has a variety of potential experiences for the fellow, as well as opportunities for the fellow to create meaningful relationships with the assistance of the fellowship director. Past fellows have worked in various locations with educational, clinical and systems development including Mozambique, India, Zimbabwe, and Trinidad; and relationships in Kenya, Senegal, Nigeria and other locations in Africa, Caribbean and Central/South America exist. We partner with the EVMS Global Health Department, which also enhances our fellowship experience to engage in wonderful domestic opportunities as well.




Curriculum

One-year fellowship Three to four months of overseas medical experience 1,000 hours of clinical work in the Emergency Department Competitive salary plus benefits Curriculum will be designed to focus on public health methodology and overseas medical missions. Two-year fellowship Five to six months of overseas medical experience 1,000 hours of clinical work in the Emergency Department each year Master of Public Health (MPH) degree Competitive salary plus benefits GEM Fellowship curriculum will be designed to focus primarily on overseas medical mission work for those who choose to pursue the MPH degree. Fellows will be required to successfully complete the mandatory curriculum requirements provided in their fellowship guide. They will also attend a conference on Tropical Medicine, approved by the Fellowship Director. A research project in an area of interest to the fellow, with the expectation of publication, is required for successful completion of the fellowship. EVMS Emergency Medicine has access to research assistants and statistical support to assist fellows. Fellows are strongly encouraged to determine their research interest and focus prior to starting the program. Fellows are encouraged to attend weekly Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds conferences and monthly EM Journal Club. Each fellow is expected to present one GEM-themed Journal Club or a lecture for the EM residency program annually. The faculty of EVMS Emergency Medicine have diverse and extensive experience and skills with expertise in: EM Ultrasound Emergency Medical Services Hyperbaric and Undersea Medicine Tactical Medicine International and Domestic Disaster Response Faculty members have expertise in leadership through active roles in the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), Virginia ACEP and the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). Fellows will work clinically as employees of Emergency Physicians of Tidewater (EPT), a private practice group that serves as faculty for EVMS Emergency Medicine. Practice opportunities within EPT will serve to broaden the fellow's clinical judgment and experience. We provide the coverage for seven emergency departments (five hospital-based and two freestanding) in the Hampton Roads area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Suffolk). Fellows will have the opportunity to supervise EM residents and off-service residents in the ED and receive an EVMS faculty appointment at the Instructor level. The fellowship will run for 12 or 24 months, depending on the selected track.

Application

For enrollment in July 2022 application deadline is December 1, 2021. For enrollment in July 2023, application deadline is December 1, 2022. Qualifications All applicants must graduate from an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency program. Applicants must be considered board-eligible or board-certified (BE/BC) by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) or the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM). All applicants must qualify for a Virginia state medical license and be able to be credentialed in all seven Sentara facilities. Master of Public Health (MPH) Fellows on the two-year track must complete the requirements for a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from an institution approved by the Fellowship Director. Fellows will be required to complete a separate application for admission and be accepted to the MPH program of their choice prior to starting the MPH and fellowship. It is anticipated that the fellow will complete the MPH degree within 18-24 months, depending on the program chosen.

All applicants are required to submit: Curriculum vitae (CV) A letter of intent/personal statement Two letters of recommendation (one must be from your EM Residency Program Director) Submit to Fellowship Director Carol McCammon, M.D., MPH. The letter of intent should be one page or less. Applicants should describe their experiences, their interests in Global Emergency Medicine and how the fellowship may enhance their career goals and expectations. Interview offers will be extended at the Fellowship Director's discretion. Fellows will be notified of acceptance through email. Fellows who are interested in the two-year track with an MPH degree must complete their MPH applications prior to the school's application deadlines. Failure to meet these requirements may exclude the fellow from the MPH program.
